The value of simple tests for peristaltic activity in hiatus hernia.

چکیده
Siegel and Hendrix (1963) showed that all patients with heartburn developed symptoms with acid perfusion of the oesophagus. Manometric studies performed during perfusion demonstrated one of the following types of motor abnormality: (1) increased amplitude and duration of peristalsis; (2) spastic non-peristaltic contraction; and (3) increased tone. A practical modification of this investigation subsequently reported (Donner, Silbiger, Hookman, and Hendrix, 1966) demonstrated that if barium is acidified (pH 1 7) cine-radiography showed aperistalsis, non-peristaltic contraction, or delayed emptying in 98-7% of patients with heartburn. This was proposed as a single test for detection of peptic oesophagitis. The present survey was undertaken to evaluate further the use of acidified barium in the diagnosis of oesophageal lesions.

Asymptomatic Diaphragmatic Hernia Diagnosed after Six Years Following Esophagectomy: A Case Report
Diaphragmatic hernia, secondary to transhiatal esophagectomy, appears to be a relatively infrequent diagnosis. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with various symptoms. Diagnosis of this condition requires a high index of suspicion. The most common cause of diaphragmatic hernia is widened esophageal hiatus during surgery; therefore, narrowing the hiatus can prevent conduit herniation. Here...
متن کاملA new mechanism of gastroesophageal reflux in hiatal hernia documented by high-resolution impedance manometry: a case report
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is recognized to be a multifactorial disease and several mechanisms leading to reflux have been described, nevertheless its pathophysiology has not been fully clarified. Hiatus hernia is a known risk factor for GERD since it impairs the esophagogastric junction, leading to: reduction in lower esophageal sphincter pressure; increase in the frequency of the ...

Contrast radiographs revealed esophageal hiatal h...
متن کاملThe use of a sternothyroid muscle flap to prevent the re-recurrence of a recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula found 10 years after the primary repair
Recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is still difficult to diagnose and repair. In almost all cases, recurrence appears relatively soon after the primary surgery. We herein describe a case of recurrent TEF that appeared 10 years after the primary repair. At 2 years of age, the patient suffered from mental retardation due to encephalitis and developed a hiatus hernia with gastro-esophageal ...
